New Years

People will say it went by too fast Life was short and it wasn't fair But it wouldn't be this way if we let moments last If we showed Time that we actually care. For all Time sees is us whittling away her body Carving her with the knife of our life Tallying the days on the trunk of trees Twisting back her arms in honor of our strife. So we cannot curse Time for only giving us so many days, When we drank champagne and cheered for the year to go away. -anna sluder

imagined stars

I always imagined stars like dazzling balls of energy and light like a hybrid of champagne and sparks and the poetry of lips. -anna sluder

The Reason

If there is a reason behind your silence Then there is a reason why your collarbones shake Like your heart is too wide For your unfrequented chest to take Or maybe you turn your body away To hide the way you cry Because your eyes are too small And your reckless tears cannot lie. So there has to be a reason For the black mascara on the walls For if there is no design Than I am nothing at all. -anna sluder

A Girl

I knew a girl.  Who fell in love with a boy who snapped her heart in half with the gracefulness of  bread broken at communion and wore a mask of forgetfulness for his sin he even looked away when she called his name,  the next day in the hallway like her  acknowledgement was too much to bear So later she stood in the same spot of ignorance and dumped a gallon of gasoline over her head so it doused her body, dribbling down her limbs she shook under the cold thick layer of flammability her hand trembling as the match pressed  so hard into the side of the box that it almost cracked he turned around as she screamed,  "Now you see me?" and swiped.  I knew a girl.  -anna sluder

chaotic greed

And sometimes the chaos runs together like wine But when it comes to avarice I swallow mine.  -anna sluder

weepings

I weep semi colons between the irrelevant thing I wish to say and the thing that I must say.  -anna sluder

Finally

And so maybe I think  That if I set the whole world on fire You'll finally see me.  -anna sluder
