Held Together

Buttons are meant to hold,
The masks that disguise our souls,
So don't let even one get pulled,
From the stitches of your silk, cotton, and wool,
For you have to be held together,
Because that's what the mirror of society sees,
Whether fake or real leather,
And who you are underneath when a button comes free,
The mirror doesn't want to see what the button truly keeps,
For the mirror is too selfish about its own shine,
Not wanting anyone's trueness to seep,
Because behind the tight buttons, not everyone is fine,
For buttons break, but so can the inside,
Nobody wants to walk in the others' shoes,
Because it reminds of what we alone have also tried to hide,
For mirrors have something behind the glass too.
